Esquire Mag Cover to Feature Electronic Paper

Saturday, July 26th, 2008

Esquire Magazine is planning to be the original magazine ever to use ELECTRONIC PAPER ON ITS COVER. Funded partly by advertiser Ford, and working with with E Ink Corporation (the folks who prepare the screen for the Amazon Kindle), Esquire will create a cover where words and pictures scroll. On the inside cover, the electronic paper will be utilized for a full-motion ad pitching the Ford Flex Crossover. Some are complaining that the use of electronic paper — often touted as a “green” technology — is super wasteful when utilized for a disposal product like a magazine (especially when utilized to advertise a gas-guzzling SUV). It’s not transparent how they’re going to handle the battery issue. The issue hits newsstands in September.

Worst USB Gadget Yet: Otaku VR Cyber Maid

Saturday, July 26th, 2008

Japan’s Geisha Tokyo Entertainment detailed a product named “Dennoh Figure ARis,” or Cyber Figure Alice, that will hit stores in the fall. Here’s how it works. You plug an included “cube” and an included “stick” into your PC and run the software. An interactive 3D “maid” seems on screen standing on superior of a software representation of the cube. By using the “stick,” you can impact what happens to the on-screen maid — for example, she reacts (presumably with horror) at the touch, and can even be undressed. (The product uses your webcam to figure out location.) Bloggers are calling it “augmented reality,” but it’s the contrary of that. With augmented reality, the true world is augmented with something virtual. In this, the virtual world is affected by something real. In other words, it’s just software for lonely nerds with a CREEPY POINTING DEVICE to go with it.

Why Can’t the Brits Hang On To Their Gadgets?

Saturday, July 26th, 2008

An advisor to UK Prime Minister Gordon Brown missing his BlackBerry while in Republic of china on an official visit with the prime minister. Was it a Chinese government “honeytrap”? The unnamed advisor was seduced by a Chinese woman who approached him in a disco in Shanghai. He went back to her apartment… yada, yada, yada… next daybreak his BlackBerry was gone. Some speculate that Chinese government spies stole the gadget as part of its Thousand Grains of Sand approach to stealing the secrets of other countries. 10 Downing Street states security wasn’t compromised. But that is just the latest instance of a UK government official losing a mobile device packed with secrets. According to a recent report, the UK Ministry of Defense has missing 747 laptops and 131 memory sticks since 2004 and the government as a whole has missing more than 1,500 laptops. Why can’t the UK government HANG ON TO ITS MOBILE tech gadgets?

Ichikoh white LED-based AFS can control the light angles of the right and left headlamps independently

Friday, July 25th, 2008

Led_afs.jpg
Ichikoh Industries, Tokyo & Tokyo & Japan showcased a white LED-based adaptive front lighting system (AFS) that can control the light angles of the right and left headlamps independently. The new Ichikoh headlamp is composed of two constant units and one swivel unit. Each of the constant units and the swivel unit is loaded with a white LED. The constant units are projector type and the swivel unit is rotated by a stepper motor. The white LED loaded on each unit has four LED chips. The swivel unit lights up the area ahead of a vehicle by reflecting the light created from the white LED twice. The headlamp has a total luminous flux of 12,000lm, which is equivalent to that of a HID lamp. The luminance efficiency of the LED is approximately 100lm/W.

The new headlamp permits adjustments of flux distribution, responding to steering conditions such as straight lane driving, curve steering and highway driving, as well as weather conditions. During heavy rain, the visibility of guardrails and side strips will be improved by directing the beams toward the shoulder.
The AFS was exhibited at AT International 2008, which took place from July 23 to 25, 2008, at Makuhari Messe in Chiba Prefecture, Japan.
